Japan

Those who know me will likely know that, when I was younger, I lived in Japan for 2 years. Much younger in fact – from 1992 to 1994, and I was only 8 years old when I left. In October 2015 I returned to the country, on holiday, for the first time in 21 years – something I’d been waiting to do for a very long time.

So, here’s the photo highlights – trimmed down to 85 photos out of a total of over 1,600(!) – covering trips down memory lane in the Tokyo and Yokohama areas and some new experiences in Kyoto.

Tokyo

Asakusa

Our base of operations in Tokyo – and home to Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, Sensō-ji.

Ueno

Ueno Zoo – containing pandas, a tiger, rhinos, elephants, crocodiles, and more than a couple of animals I’ve never heard of...

Akihabara

Electric town! More of a tourist attraction and anime culture hub than the useful bargain centre it used to be, I think.

Shinjuku

People and lights overload...

Tsukiji

The chaotic fish market, the largest fish and seafood wholesale market in the world...

Yoyogi Park & Shinjuku

Sumida

Nikko

The temples and shrines of Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Yokohama

My former home...

Hakone

Kamakura

One of Japan's ancient capitals, with one of its best statues of Buddha, and loads of other shrines...

Kyoto

Higashiyama

From the peaceful surrounds of Shoren-in, to the immense tourist hordes at Kiyomizu-dera…

Fushimi-Inari Taisha

Thousands and thousands of torii gates strewn across a mountainside.

Arashiyama

Probably the best nature to be found in Kyoto.

Kinkaku-ji

Nara

Where the deer are firmly in charge...
